So, what’s the deal?
Little Fiction is a mostly digital publisher of short fiction and nonfiction singles. We are not a lit mag, though we do publish on a monthly basis. Occasionally, we do themed anthologies (so far food, technology, and a couple about telling stories in list form). And occasionally, those anthologies go to print — our first three books are NOMFICTION, RE/CODED, and A MIXTAPE OF WORDS.
Why is everything free?
Because our main focus is on building an audience for our writers and the stories we publish. And because people love free stuff. And because if we charged for the stories, not as many people would read them and we’d either be so focused on getting a return or obsessed with our losses that we probably would have shut down years ago. So instead, we focus on the stories. Also, the books aren’t free.
How does it work for writers?
It’s the usual sort of thing: writers submit their stories, we pick the ones we like best — generally speaking, the ones that intrigue us or move us or challenge us or make us laugh — and we publish them. Along the way, we work closely with the writers through the editing process and welcome their input on cover design (each story gets its own unique cover, and lately we’ve even been making trailers for them).
What happens to the rights?
Writers retain all rights to their work.
Do you pay writers?
Unfortunately, no. Though we do pay if we take your work into print (we’re hoping to make more books in the future, but it’s still new for us so it’s kind of a “let’s see how this goes” approach at the moment). If it’s any consolation, we also don’t charge reading or submission fees and we don’t allow advertising on the site. We also aren’t affiliated with any university, nor are we reliant on grant money or any other form of income that would dictate our content. Also, everyone at Little Fiction | Big Truths works for free (but I’m sure that’s no consolation to them / us).
What do you publish?
Mostly literary fiction and nonfiction. We don’t typically dig genre stuff (sci-fi, fantasty, etc.) and we don’t publish poetry. We also don’t typically accept work that has been previously published. And we prefer not to publish chapters of novels (it’s all about the short story, yo).
What do you look for in your non-fiction submissions?
We look for essays and creative non-fiction pieces that move us, surprise us, motivate us, challenge us and comfort us. Above all, we look for writing that doesn’t shy away from the truth — any truth.
Do I need a fancy schmancy device to read your stories?
Yes and no. To read the ePubs — yes — you typically need an eReader, smartphone or tablet — something running Android or iOS. But you can also read the stories online. So no.
How can I read an ePub?
ePubs can be read on just about any device these days, except for Amazon Kindle. Why? Because Amazon. So screw ’em. For smartphones and tablets, we suggest using either the iBooks or Kobo apps (both are free and display ePubs quite nicely).
Who’s behind all this?
Little Fiction | Big Truths was founded by Troy Palmer. Our nonfiction (Big Truths) editor is Amanda Leduc. And our fiction editor (LF) is Beth Gilstrap. You can learn more about the full team here.
How often do you publish?
Good question. We publish every month (the first Wednesday of each one) and we typically publish two stories at a time. Sometimes more, rarely less.
Can you tell me more?
Of course we can. For any still unanswered questions, just send us email us to info@littlefiction.com
